Ten years after insulting his coach Laurent Blanc on Periscope, Serge Aurier chose humor to close the chapter — humor that did not convince everyone. Invited Friday evening to a show hosted by journalist Hervé Mathoux, the Ivorian right-back read a scripted apology letter, his eyes previously moistened by an onion.

« Dear coach, if you only knew how much I regret it. Ten years have passed, and I can’t stop thinking about you. I didn’t mean a word of it. Let’s talk about it over a coffee. I’m inviting you, I insist. Please coach, forgive me », he declared, before clarifying himself that he didn’t mean a word of it.

The sequence immediately drew criticism. Sports consultant Héloïse Kane, a former athlete, offered a direct critique: « Why put another coin in the machine ten years later? It sends us back to a bad image we had of him and shows us that he wouldn’t have evolved. »

The Periscope affair dates back to 2016. Aurier, then a PSG defender, had made insulting remarks toward Laurent Blanc, calling him a « faggot » during a live session on the social network. His teammate goalkeeper Salvatore Sirigu was also targeted. Initially sanctioned by the club, which relegated him to the CFA reserve team, Aurier rejoined the professional squad for the first leg of the Ligue des Champions quarter-final against Manchester City on April 6, 2016 at Parc des Princes.

Currently without a club since his departure from Persepolis in the Iranian top division, the Ivorian international did not use this media return to definitively turn the page — at least not in the eyes of observers.
