Atalanta are working on a new contract for Ederson after Manchester United effectively called off a £38m deal for the Brazilian midfielder, with the Serie A club’s director Cristiano Giuntoli admitting he was caught off guard by the collapse of the transfer.

United had agreed a fee with Atalanta in early June, and Ederson himself had hinted during the World Cup that the move to Old Trafford was close to being finalised. However, the deal grew complicated after medical tests raised concerns about a knee injury the 27-year-old sustained last season, with United understood to be considering renegotiating the terms.

Speaking via transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano, Giuntoli said: “We were stunned [by Man United calling Ederson deal off]. Now we are working on a new contract for him.”

Ederson had also attracted interest from Atlético Madrid earlier in the summer, but the Spanish club shifted their focus to Wolves midfielder João Gomes — a move that itself appears to have stalled. United had monitored Ederson throughout his four years at Atalanta and viewed him as a key part of a planned midfield rebuild.

Despite the setback, United have moved quickly elsewhere in the transfer window. The club confirmed the £50m signing of Brazilian midfielder Andrey Santos from Chelsea on Monday, and are also set to complete the arrival of Aston Villa’s Youri Tielemans after triggering the Belgian’s £35m release clause.
