Arteta sets personal assurance condition for £130m Julian Alvarez move to Arsenal

Mikel Arteta is prepared to push for a £130m move for Julian Alvarez in the final week of the transfer window, but the Arsenal manager will first demand personal assurances that the Argentina international genuinely wants to join the club rather than treating it as a consolation prize.

Alvarez has been locked in a bitter stand-off with Atletico Madrid after openly agitating for a transfer to Barcelona. Atletico have flatly refused to sell to their La Liga rivals, but may now be open to doing business with Arsenal. The situation deteriorated sharply last weekend when Atletico fans booed the 26-year-old former Manchester City forward during their draw with Villarreal, leaving his future at the club in serious doubt.

Arteta’s hesitation is understandable given that Alvarez has publicly stated his preference for Barcelona. The Arsenal head coach would need convincing that the World Cup winner would arrive at the Emirates fully invested rather than harbouring ambitions of a future move to the Catalan club.

Financing the deal would also require Arsenal to move players on. Gabriel Martinelli is closing in on a £50m switch to Saudi Pro League side Al Hilal — a record sale for the Gunners — after the Brazilian winger’s initial reluctance to leave England softened once it became clear he is no longer central to Arteta’s plans. The club are also looking to sell Fabio Vieira, with Hamburg pushing to complete a deal, while Napoli have shown interest in Gabriel Jesus, though the striker’s wage demands remain a significant obstacle. Jesus has also expressed a preference to stay in England but accepts his opportunities at Arsenal will be limited.

A potential swap arrangement involving Viktor Gyokeres with Atletico Madrid has been floated, though the prospect of signing Juventus winger Kenan Yildiz appears remote after it emerged the Turkey international requires knee surgery.

Arsenal have already committed significant funds this window, bringing in Christos Tzolis, Bruno Guimarães and Ezri Konsa. That outlay means the club could yet opt against further major spending even if the Martinelli sale is completed. Eberechi Eze offers cover on the left flank and may allow Arteta to be patient — but if Alvarez signals a genuine desire to move to north London, Arsenal are willing to act.
