Arteta open to January loan as Arsenal review Dowman's future every six months

Mikel Arteta has refused to rule out a loan exit for Arsenal teenager Max Dowman in January, saying the club will reassess his situation every six months to determine the best path for his development.

Dowman, who became the Premier League’s youngest ever scorer last season, had been absent from Arsenal’s matchday squads for the first four games of the campaign — including a weekend win over Sunderland where he did not even make the bench. He responded emphatically when given his chance, scoring twice in a Carabao Cup victory at Ipswich to reignite debate about how best to manage his progression.

Arteta had set a clear expectation before that outing. “Max will have his chance. He will have his minutes and he will have to earn them like anybody else,” the Arsenal manager said. “You know the talent that we have, the players that we have there, we need to help him and find a way to make sure he continues to develop.”

Following the Ipswich performance, Arteta acknowledged that a temporary departure from the Emirates is not off the table. “We will evaluate every six months where we are and what is the best thing for him to do and then make the right decision,” he said. “It depends on a lot of factors — what he needs, and what the team needs as well, the availability we have in the squad, the minutes that he is playing and the qualities of those minutes. We have to be open, but now the focus is to be here and to impact the team.”

The timing of any potential loan is significant. Dowman turns 17 on December 31, which is the earliest age at which he would be eligible to join another club temporarily. His birthday falls the day before the January transfer window opens, meaning a short-term move could theoretically be sanctioned almost immediately.

Whether that happens will depend on several factors: how much game time Dowman accumulates between now and the New Year, Arsenal’s injury situation in attack, and how deep they remain in all four competitions heading into the second half of the season.

Should he leave on loan, there is a notable name in the frame. Jack Wilshere — himself a product of Arsenal’s Hale End academy who went to Bolton on loan in 2010 before going on to deliver a celebrated Champions League performance against Barcelona’s midfield — is now manager at Luton Town. The Kenilworth Road club, competing in League One, has been mentioned as a potential destination, with Wilshere’s own developmental journey at Arsenal making him a natural mentor for a player at a similar crossroads.
