Alonso warns Chelsea they cannot 'compete in the Premier League' after 3-0 Brentford humbling

Xabi Alonso declared that Chelsea’s performance in their 3-0 defeat at Brentford was “not enough to compete in the Premier League”, as his side’s defensive frailties were ruthlessly exposed at the Gtech Community Stadium on Friday night.

The match was goalless until just after the hour mark, when Jaidon Anthony headed home from a corner. Igor Thiago and Fabio Carvalho then struck in the final ten minutes to seal a dominant win for the Bees, leaving Alonso visibly frustrated by his team’s inability to sustain their intensity across a full 90 minutes.

“I’m disappointed at the end with the second half and the result,” Alonso said. “This is not enough to compete in the Premier League, not to be able to go for the 90 minutes. This is why today we were punished. At the moment, we are not being consistent enough to compete during the whole game — 45 minutes is not enough, you need to play the whole game knowing each detail is important and each action can be decisive.”

The defeat extends Chelsea’s winless run to three matches, following a loss at Arsenal and a draw with Hull. Alonso was without Joao Pedro and Reece James for the trip to west London, though the manager made clear that personnel alone did not explain the drop in standards.

“We dropped our consistency, and our competitive mentality needed in the second half,” he added. “It’s about 95 minutes, and we have not been able to keep that level throughout these few games at the start of the season. It’s something that we’ll have to do better.”

Captain Levi Colwill was equally blunt in his assessment, acknowledging that Brentford physically dominated Chelsea in the penalty area. “Not good enough,” he said. “At times we have been bullied in the box and we definitely need to improve. We have full trust in our set-piece coach and are still adjusting to new ideas, but we need to improve as a team.”

The result underlines a defensive problem that pre-dates Friday’s game. Even during Chelsea’s encouraging start to the campaign, their goals-conceded tally and lack of clean sheets had already placed them among the Premier League’s most vulnerable backlines. Shipping three more at Brentford does nothing to ease those concerns.

The defeat leaves Chelsea in seventh place, though they could slip into the bottom half of the table depending on results across the rest of the weekend.
