Arsenal warned to probe JJ Gabriel's character before pursuing Man Utd exit bid

Arsenal have been urged to conduct thorough background checks on 15-year-old JJ Gabriel before making any move for the Manchester United academy prodigy, who has formally expressed a desire to leave Old Trafford.

Gabriel shocked United’s hierarchy by pushing for an exit despite never having made a senior appearance for the club. The teenager was named Under-18 Premier League Player of the Season last term and is widely regarded as one of the most exciting young talents in world football. Reports suggest that manager Michael Carrick’s decision to hand Champions League minutes to Shea Lacey and Harry Amass ahead of him proved the final straw.

PSG are understood to be keen on the player, and Gabriel has also been spotted in Barcelona, with several of Europe’s leading clubs monitoring his situation. Arsenal are among those credited with an interest.

Former Premier League striker Darren Bent, however, believes any prospective buyer would be wise to pick up the phone to United before going further. Speaking on talkSport, Bent said: “So say he was going to go to Arsenal — Arsenal straightaway would go, ‘hold on a second here’, because they would have played against Manchester United and seen how special he is. First thing they’d do is go, ‘Hold on a second, why is he going to be leaving?’ So they would call up Manchester United straightaway and go: ‘Alright, what’s the problem?’”

Bent added that this kind of due diligence is standard practice across the game at every level, with clubs routinely seeking character references before committing to a deal.

The former striker also pushed back on the idea that United should feel pressured by a player yet to make his professional debut. “I just don’t understand that at 15, when you’ve barely scratched the surface, why you would try and throw demands out like that,” Bent said. “There are more senior players out there who are more accomplished than you who have conducted themselves better than this.”

Bent was equally cautious about projecting Gabriel’s ceiling, noting that not every highly touted academy player fulfils their early promise.

The story carries echoes of the movement between the two clubs in recent years. United defender Ayden Heaven left Arsenal’s academy to join the Red Devils and has since broken into the first team — a reminder that such cross-rival transfers, while rare, do happen.
