Antonelli charges from 19th to seal Italian GP win as Schiff hails 'generational talent'

Kimi Antonelli delivered one of the drives of his young Formula 1 career at Monza on Sunday, charging from 19th on the grid to claim victory at his home Italian Grand Prix and extend his championship lead to 66 points over Mercedes team-mate George Russell.

The 20-year-old capitalised on a mid-race virtual safety car to pit for fresh medium tyres, then systematically hunted down race-leader Russell, who had stayed out on older hard tyres. Antonelli closed the gap and swept past his team-mate to take the win in front of a passionate Tifosi crowd.

Analyst Naomi Schiff was emphatic in her praise after the race. “Today, everybody is so impressed by what Kimi Antonelli has done,” she said. “Not only did he climb through the field, but then after that pitstop, he had to close up that gap again, and he just did it. And he took the victory here at home. Incredible.”

Schiff also reflected on the moment Antonelli appeared in Russell’s mirrors. “It took him about six or seven laps before he was behind George. Obviously, George and Max were going at it as well in the beginning. And then I just had a feeling in my heart like, ‘Oh gosh, if George looks in the mirrors now and realises his team-mate is already behind him, oh my God, I would have sunk a little bit in that moment.’”

The Italian GP win is Antonelli’s seventh career victory and marks another landmark in a sophomore season that has already rewritten the record books. Earlier this year he became the youngest driver to lead the F1 standings after back-to-back wins at the Chinese and Japanese Grands Prix, and he added four further victories before the summer break.

With 66 points now separating him from Russell at the top of the standings, Antonelli’s grip on the championship is tightening. Whether his team-mate — or anyone else on the grid — can mount a sustained response remains the defining question of the season’s second half.
