Anthony Wint reveals eight-year gambling addiction dwarfed his two UFC fights

Anthony Wint, who earned a UFC contract with a first-round knockout of Matthew Adams on Dana White’s Contender Series, has revealed that his hardest fight had nothing to do with mixed martial arts — it was an eight-year battle with gambling addiction that began in college and deepened when his NFL dreams collapsed.

Wint was signed as an undrafted free agent by the New York Jets in 2018 and waived the following year. As a planned comeback to the league failed to materialise, he exhausted his savings and spent a period living out of his car. It was during that lowest point that the addiction took its tightest grip.

Speaking to Ariel Helwani, Wint traced the habit back to a single moment in college when a teammate’s father handed him $300 to gamble with. “I turned that $300 into $1,000, and in my head a switch went off,” he said. “I was like, ‘I’ve been homeless my whole life. I’ve been trying to help my mom out. We’ve been in poverty all our lives. I just made $700 in two hours.’ That was the trap. That was the trap of the devil. And he had me in those chains for eight years.”

Wint made an 11-day turnaround for his Octagon debut, finishing Terrance Chatman at UFC Sacramento. Yet he insists the psychological challenge of competing in Las Vegas — surrounded by slot machines and blackjack tables — eclipsed anything either opponent put in front of him inside the cage.

“The battle wasn’t Matthew Adams, the battle wasn’t Terrance Chatman,” Wint said. “The battle was having me sit in Vegas and not gamble. And by the grace of God, I was able to sit and would see slot machines and blackjack tables and know that I was stronger than the addiction I had before.”

Wint’s account is a rare public acknowledgement from an active UFC fighter of the mental and financial hardships that can precede a career in the sport. Having refused to leave Las Vegas without securing his UFC debut after the Contender Series win, he now enters the promotion’s roster having already overcome what he considers his most significant opponent.
