Alonso charges from 18th to ninth at Dutch GP to reignite GOAT debate

Fernando Alonso silenced doubters with a drive from 18th to ninth at the Dutch Grand Prix in Zandvoort, collecting two points for Aston Martin in the first race back after the summer shutdown and reigniting debate over his status among the sport’s all-time greats.

It has been a brutal 2026 season for the Silverstone outfit. Alonso suffered four retirements in the first half of the year, while team-mate Lance Stroll endured seven, leaving both drivers stranded at the foot of the standings. Aston Martin responded with significant upgrade packages introduced at the Hungarian and Dutch Grands Prix, and the improvements appeared to bear fruit at Zandvoort.

Before the break, Alonso’s sole point had come at Monaco, where several rivals were penalised for pitlane speeding infractions. Sunday’s ninth-place finish — achieved on outright pace, aided in part by Max Verstappen’s retirement — represents a more emphatic statement of his ability to extract the maximum from whatever machinery he is handed.

Fan reaction on social media was swift and effusive. “As soon as he is given even a slightly competent car, he delivers,” one Reddit user wrote. Another added: “P18 to P9 on pure pace — finally the AM is something resembling a real car.” Several went further, with posts declaring him the “actual GOAT” and one user noting: “You can’t spell Fernando Alonso without G.O.A and T.”

Perhaps the most telling tribute came from a fan imagining Alonso in more competitive machinery: “Man, we say it time after time. Alonso is just a machine. Imagine him in a Macca or a Merc. Absolutely insane. I hope he stays for two more years and Newey-Honda get their s**t together and give him a championship-winning car.”

Alonso now sits 19th in the drivers’ championship on three points, level with 18th-placed Esteban Ocon. He is ahead of Yuki Tsunoda — who replaced Liam Lawson at Racing Bulls for Zandvoort — as well as Stroll, Valtteri Bottas, and Sergio Perez, all of whom remain on zero points.
