Every one of the 22 Formula 1 drivers will take the wheel of a custom Lego minicar during the traditional parade lap at Silverstone ahead of Sunday’s British Grand Prix, Formula 1 and the Lego Group have confirmed.

Each minicar was constructed from 28,000 Lego bricks and is capable of reaching speeds of up to 25km/h. The vehicles were designed and built by a team of 20 engineers at Lego’s Czech Republic factory, a process that took more than 6,400 hours in total. Weighing 280kg each — 65kg of which is Lego bricks — the cars ride on standard go-kart wheels.

The activation builds on what Formula 1 described as one of the most talked-about moments of the 2024 season, when drivers paired up in Lego cars for the Miami GP parade. That event quickly turned into an impromptu race, with bricks scattering across the track as the cars jostled for position.

This year’s version scales up the concept significantly: rather than 10 shared cars, each driver gets their own individual minicar for the Silverstone outing, which is scheduled 90 minutes before the race start at 1:30pm BST.

“Last year’s F1 drivers’ parade in Miami with the Lego big build cars was one of the most memorable and talked-about moments of the season, capturing the imagination of fans around the world and showing a different side of the sport,” said Emily Prazer, chief commercial officer at Formula 1. “This year, we’re building on that moment to create an incredible spectacle for fans attending the British Grand Prix and those watching globally.”

Julia Goldin, chief product and marketing officer of the Lego Group, said the response from drivers and fans after Miami made the decision straightforward. “The excitement from drivers and fans alike at last year’s Miami drivers parade was impossible to ignore. We wanted to go even bigger than last year and ensure we continue to surprise and delight our fans.”
