Manchester United are in a state of confusion after 15-year-old JJ Gabriel formally requested to cancel his registration at Old Trafford, refusing to train on Tuesday and ruling himself out of a potential first-team debut against Brighton in the Carabao Cup third round on Wednesday.

Gabriel had been named in the squad Michael Carrick planned to use against the Seagulls, and would have become United’s youngest-ever first-team player had he featured. Instead, the teenager submitted a formal notification asking to leave the club he has been with since the age of 11.

The timing has left United officials bewildered. Just last Thursday, Gabriel scored a hat-trick on his UEFA Youth League debut against Sabah, a performance that accelerated his path to senior consideration. No explanation for the sudden change of heart has emerged from the player’s camp.

Despite the shock of the request, United believe the situation can still be resolved. A club source confirmed that Gabriel cannot legally be de-registered at this stage, and the time remaining on his current agreement gives the club room to work through the issue. Gabriel is not eligible to sign a professional contract until he turns 17, nor a scholarship agreement until he turns 16 — a milestone he will not reach until 6 October.

For now, his absence from training effectively ends any prospect of a senior appearance this week, but United remain hopeful that dialogue can bring the teenager back into the fold before the situation becomes irreversible.
