15-year-old JJ Gabriel stuns Man United by requesting exit before potential debut

The season has been inconsistent: an opening-day 2-0 loss to Hull City was followed by a 5-2 win over Ipswich Town, a 2-2 draw with Everton, a 4-0 Champions League victory over Sabah FK, and then the derby setback.

Adding to the scrutiny, club legend Wayne Rooney has publicly questioned United’s summer transfer strategy. Speaking after the City defeat, Rooney said: “We need to be a bit more clever with the players we’re bringing in. What I don’t understand is that we’ve signed [Youri] Tielemans and [Andrey] Santos” — the latter arriving on loan from Chelsea — suggesting the midfield recruitment has not addressed the squad’s most pressing needs.
