Gabriel had been the standout talent at Carrington this term, opening his UEFA Youth League account with a hat-trick against Sabah FK’s Under-19 side. That followed an outstanding campaign with United’s Under-18s, in which he scored 28 goals in 35 matches, before stepping up to the Under-21s — where he has already contributed two goals and two assists in his first two Premier League 2 appearances.

Having turned 15 before August 31, Gabriel met the Premier League’s age requirements for senior squad selection this season. First-team manager Michael Carrick had been integrating him into senior training sessions, and there was growing speculation he could make a record-breaking top-flight debut before his 16th birthday in October. That prospect now appears to have been extinguished.

Because players cannot sign professional contracts under FA regulations until the age of 17, Gabriel’s ties to United are based on schoolboy academy registration terms rather than a formal professional deal. His camp has bypassed standard transfer procedures by requesting the cancellation of that registration directly, which means United risk losing him for tribunal-set compensation rather than commanding a significant transfer fee.

Barcelona have previously been linked with an interest in Gabriel, with reports suggesting the Spanish club made approaches to the player’s family. He is unlikely to be short of suitors given his scoring record and the profile he has built in youth football circles.
