15-year-old JJ Gabriel requests immediate release from Manchester United

Manchester United are facing an unexpected dispute with 15-year-old academy prospect JJ Gabriel, who has formally requested to cancel his registration with the club and become a free agent.

Gabriel, who joined United’s academy at the age of 11, is reported to have submitted a written notice of his desire to leave immediately. The club, however, does not believe the situation is beyond repair and has not yet accepted the request.

Premier League regulations complicate any swift resolution. Rules governing youth registrations state that an early cancellation requires the agreement of all parties — the club, the player, and their parent or guardian. If no agreement is reached, any party may ask the Premier League to issue a binding decision on the termination request.

Gabriel’s age also limits his immediate options. Players cannot sign scholarship agreements until they turn 16, and professional contracts are not permitted until the age of 17, meaning he would not be able to join another club straight away even if his registration were cancelled.

The timing adds further surprise. Gabriel had been involved in United’s pre-season preparations over the summer, featuring in a friendly against Atlético Madrid, and the club had reportedly planned to include him in the squad for a Carabao Cup fixture against Brighton.

United retain the right to challenge Gabriel’s cancellation request under existing league rules, and with the situation still fluid, the club appears determined to find a resolution before any formal process is triggered.
