Zidane set to start Restes in goal against Belgium on Monday
For the fourth and final match of the gathering, Zinédine Zidane is considering rotating even at goalkeeper: Guillaume Restes could replace Mike Maignan against Belgium at Stade de France.
Zinédine Zidane could go even further with his rotation during France-Belgium on Monday evening at Stade de France, the last match of his first gathering as head of the Blues. According to RMC, the manager is considering starting Guillaume Restes in goal, which would constitute a first cap for the young goalkeeper.
Mike Maignan was the only goalkeeper fielded in the first three matches — victory in Turkey (0-1), victory in Belgium (0-1) and draw against Italy (1-1). Zidane had nevertheless insisted on his status: « Mike is our starting goalkeeper and the other two are working really well, we’ve already had a point with Fabien (Barthez). » A change of course that illustrates the extent of the rotation practiced throughout the week.
Between the trip to Turkey and the one to Belgium, Zidane had kept only two starters: Maignan himself and defender Maxence Lacroix. For this fourth match in eleven days, the manager confirmed the trend on Sunday in a press conference: « There will be changes, that’s for sure, it’s our fourth match, we can’t just do anything either. We’re going to make intelligent changes and, above all, to be competitive. »
Beyond the goalkeeper question, the Lény Yoro case intrigues. Called up during the gathering, the central defender at Manchester United is the only outfield player not to have played a single minute. The suspension of Dayot Upamecano complicates the equation: with only three centre-backs available, Zidane will have to choose between continuing with Maxence Lacroix and Jérémy Jacquet or giving Yoro his first start in international football.
