Wolff reveals Antonelli sought private meeting to shake off premature title celebrations
Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff has disclosed a closed-door conversation with Kimi Antonelli during the Mexico City Grand Prix weekend, in which the 20-year-old admitted he was struggling to cope with paddock figures congratulating him on a championship he had not yet won.
Kimi Antonelli walked into Toto Wolff’s office during the Mexico City Grand Prix weekend, closed the door, and told his team principal he was finding it almost impossible to handle the wave of premature congratulations flooding in from the paddock. The Mercedes boss revealed the private exchange in his post-race media duties, offering a rare glimpse into the psychological demands placed on a 20-year-old on the verge of a world title.
“When I’m sitting in my office, and then he comes in, closes the door, I know, OK, there’s something on his chest,” Wolff said. Antonelli had grown deeply uncomfortable with media figures and VIPs treating the championship as a foregone conclusion before a single lap of the feature race had been completed.
“He said that it’s really difficult to cope with the fact that people are congratulating him for a championship when it was only Friday or Saturday,” Wolff noted. “And he felt the job wasn’t done.”
Wolff’s response was deliberately blunt. Rather than acknowledging the historic weight of the moment, the Mercedes team principal stripped the situation back to its basics, reminding Antonelli that the fundamentals of racing have not changed since his karting days.
“The same pressure… As a kid, I promise you, you felt the same pressure that you’re feeling now,” Wolff told the Italian driver. “It’s no difference. You’re driving a car… Just do your own thing. No different than when you were 12 years old.”
The approach worked. Wolff noted that Antonelli left the meeting visibly lighter, the weight of expectation having lifted enough for him to focus on execution rather than occasion.
Beyond that single conversation, Wolff indicated that shielding Antonelli from the more corrosive elements of the Formula 1 environment has become a structured priority for the team. Mercedes have deliberately built what Wolff described as a psychological fortress around their new champion, an organisational effort designed to protect a young driver still navigating his first full season at the sport’s highest level.
