Wolff 'definitely' surprised by Antonelli's 2026 leap as rookie leads championship by 59 points

Kimi Antonelli has stunned even his own team principal in 2026, with Mercedes boss Toto Wolff describing the young Italian’s consistency as one of the greatest surprises of his professional career. Antonelli, in just his second Formula 1 season, holds a 59-point championship lead over both team-mate George Russell and Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton.

Twelve months ago at Zandvoort, Wolff was characterising Antonelli’s rookie campaign in familiar terms — flashes of brilliance offset by difficult weekends. “Sometimes there are brilliant moments that leave our mouths open, and sometimes we are pulling our hair out,” Wolff said at the time. “But that is all in line with expectations.”

The expectation across the paddock was that 2026 would follow a similar pattern. Instead, Antonelli has podium finishes in every grand prix this season bar Barcelona and Silverstone, a level of consistency that has caught even Wolff off guard.

Asked whether Antonelli’s progress ranks among the biggest surprises of his long tenure as a team principal, Wolff’s answer was unequivocal. “Definitely,” he said.

Wolff acknowledged, however, that the warning signs — or rather, the signals of what was coming — were there from those who had seen elite talent up close. “I think the great ones, they know,” he said. “You say it needs one to know one. And I think that when you listen to Lewis or to Max last year, they already said that he has the potential. And that’s what we felt in the team too, looking at his previous records in karting and the junior formulas.”

“Nevertheless, to come out after the winter and just nailing it pretty much every single race is one of the big surprises in my professional racing career.”

For Wolff, the explanation for Antonelli’s rapid development goes beyond the technical. He suggested the 2026 machinery may suit the Italian’s driving style better than the previous generation of ground-effect cars, but he placed equal weight on a more human factor — the ability to process and learn.

“When I analyse it and ask myself what are the reasons that he had such a good reputation in the junior formulas and karting, I think it’s his processing power,” Wolff said. “I think he just needed the winter to process it. Why was it good? Why was it bad? What do I need to do?”

The contrast with a year ago could hardly be sharper. Where Antonelli was once described as a driver finding his feet at the highest level, Wolff now says he is “no longer a deer in the headlights” — a driver who has arrived, and who the championship standings suggest may be very difficult to stop.
