Jesus Valenzuela will take charge of the World Cup round-of-32 tie between Ivory Coast and Norway on Tuesday evening at Arlington’s Dallas Stadium, with the winner advancing to face Brazil in the last 16.

The Venezuelan referee arrives at the fixture with substantial international pedigree, having officiated at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar — where he oversaw England and USA’s goalless draw and France’s 3-1 victory over Poland — as well as two group-stage matches at this summer’s tournament: Australia’s win over Turkiye and Bosnia and Herzegovina’s heavy defeat of Qatar.

Beyond the World Cup, Valenzuela has refereed at three Copa America tournaments, the Olympics, and the FIFA Club World Cup on two occasions, making him one of the more experienced officials in the competition.

The 42-year-old carries a reputation for strict disciplinary enforcement, having issued 1,908 yellow cards and 115 red cards across his 387 professional matches — a record that both sets of players will be mindful of heading into a high-stakes knockout fixture.

Valenzuela will be assisted by fellow Venezuelans Jose Urrego and Tulio Moreno. VAR duties fall to Paraguayan pair Juan Gabriel Benitez and Eduardo Cardozo.

For Ivory Coast, the match represents a historic milestone: Emerse Fae’s side are making their first-ever appearance in the knockout rounds of the World Cup after finishing second in Group E behind Germany. Norway, meanwhile, progressed as runners-up in Group I, unable to dislodge tournament favourites France from top spot.

The winner will face Brazil in the round of 16 at New York New Jersey Stadium on 5 July, after Carlo Ancelotti’s side edged Japan 2-1 in Houston on Monday evening.
