Kai Rooney is targeting a breakout campaign at Manchester United’s academy after recovering from the injury that cut short his 2025/26 season, declaring “Roll on pre-season” on social media as he prepares for life in older age groups.

The 16-year-old forward — son of United’s all-time leading scorer Wayne Rooney — made six appearances for the club’s Under-18s last season, including his debut in a 1-0 win against Everton in August 2025 at the age of 15. His campaign was brought to a premature end in March when he suffered a season-ending injury, ruling him out of the FA Youth Cup final against Manchester City, which United lost 2-1.

Rooney’s return comes with an added boost: he will now be permitted to wear his Puma-sponsored boots for United. A club policy requires all academy players at U16 level to wear identical footwear — a rule Wayne Rooney publicly praised. Speaking on The Smith Brothers: Not A Podcast, the United legend explained the reasoning: “All the academy have to wear the same boots. They do it because there’s people from areas where they can’t afford certain boots so I think it’s really good.”

Having celebrated his 16th birthday before the August 31 cut-off, Kai now steps into age groups where that policy does not apply, freeing him to use the Puma deal he signed at just 12 years old in 2022.

Social media posts showing the teenager in the gym and on holiday suggest he is physically and mentally resetting ahead of the new campaign, which will be overseen by Michael Carrick, confirmed as United’s permanent first-team manager in May.

Asked in an Instagram interview with The Talent Hunter where he sees himself in five years, Rooney Jnr was direct: “Playing on the biggest stage amongst the best players, winning trophies.”
