Van Dijk hails Gakpo as 'massively important' after failed Manchester City move

Virgil van Dijk has declared Cody Gakpo “massively” important to Liverpool after the Dutch forward’s proposed move to Manchester City fell through in the final days of the summer transfer window, with Gakpo underlining his value by setting up Alexander Isak twice in Friday’s victory over Ipswich.

Gakpo had been linked with Tottenham Hotspur before Manchester City emerged as the frontrunners, with the forward understood to have approved a switch to the Etihad Stadium. The deal ultimately collapsed for several reasons, not least Liverpool’s inability to source a replacement.

The 25-year-old has wasted no time in justifying his retention. He scored on the opening day of the season, added an assist against Nottingham Forest, and then delivered a two-assist performance at Portman Road on Friday evening.

Speaking after the Ipswich match, van Dijk was unequivocal in his assessment. “Massively,” he said when asked how important Gakpo has been. “Obviously I said before the transfer window was closed that he’s important for us and he will be important for us this season as well. And he showed it again today. Last week as well with the assists, over the last couple of years as well. So keep going.”

Liverpool manager Andoni Iraola echoed that sentiment ahead of the trip to Ipswich, insisting he had no doubts over Gakpo’s commitment despite the transfer speculation. “My relationship with Cody has been very honest from the beginning,” Iraola said. “He has played very well for us so far. He was always aware of the situation in the market, we were constantly talking. I hope we can keep him at the same level. He is in a good place physically and mentally and I’m very happy to pick him.”

Gakpo’s strike partner Alexander Isak also spoke positively about their developing combination, suggesting there is more to come. “Obviously as attackers, we always train with each other and try and get to know each other even better again,” Isak said. “Hopefully we can assist each other many times — so he owes me a few assists now.”

Gakpo now appears set to remain at Anfield at least until January, with Liverpool supporters hopeful that his partnership with Isak will continue to flourish. The Reds next face Atlético Madrid in the opening game of their Champions League campaign, followed by a home fixture against Fulham.
