Unplayable pitch at Parc des Princes: Rennes hosts PSG instead
The LFP decided on Wednesday to swap the Ligue 1 opening match between PSG and Rennes after deeming the Parc des Princes pitch unsafe for players. The match will be held at Roazhon Park this Sunday, August 23 at 8:45 p.m.
The LFP ruled on Wednesday: the closing match of Ligue 1’s opening day between PSG and Stade Rennais, originally scheduled at Parc des Princes, will instead be played at Roazhon Park this Sunday, August 23 at 8:45 p.m. The competitions commission cited the condition of the Paris pitch as “not allowing for player safety to be assured”.
Alerted urgently early in the week, the LFP first sought an alternative venue in the Île-de-France region without success. Postponing the match was also ruled out, as both clubs are competing in European competition this season. Swapping the fixture thus became the only viable option, four days before kickoff.
However, the decision does not fully satisfy Stade Rennais. The Breton club insists on distinguishing a “temporary relocation for the away leg” from a true home-and-away swap, and intends to retain its reception of PSG currently scheduled for March 6, 2027. The operation also represents a significant loss of revenue for Rennes: ticket sales, VIP spaces, season-ticket holders unable to travel, and costs already incurred for the trip to Paris.
For PSG, the club acknowledged “the inconveniences caused” to its supporters and committed to quickly communicating the terms of ticket reimbursement.
The stakes extend beyond the opening weekend alone. The LFP’s competitions commission must still rule on the return match, scheduled for matchday 23. If Rennes prevails and hosts PSG again on that occasion, Stade Rennais would total 18 home matches out of 34 days this season, compared to only 16 for Paris — an unprecedented imbalance in the distribution of home matches.
