Messi fined for slapping Philadelphia Union player in heated 2-2 MLS draw
Lionel Messi and Inter Miami teammate Ian Fray have both been fined by MLS for making contact with Philadelphia Union players in the head and neck area during stoppage time of Wednesday's 2-2 draw.
Lionel Messi and Inter Miami defender Ian Fray have been fined undisclosed amounts by MLS after separate incidents involving contact to the head and neck of Philadelphia Union players during second-half stoppage time of a 2-2 draw on Wednesday night.
Messi slapped Union midfielder Quinn Sullivan on the back of the neck as the pair exchanged words. The Argentine had earlier scored his first goal since the death of his father, Jorge Messi, and also contributed an assist in the result.
Sullivan was also central to the incident that earned Fray his fine. After losing his footing while dribbling into the penalty area, Sullivan became tangled with Fray, who grabbed him by the neck. Sullivan responded by tackling Fray to the ground.
MLS confirmed both fines on Friday but did not disclose the specific amounts handed to either player.
In a separate disciplinary action, Minnesota United FC defender Anthony Markanich was fined for embellishment during the second half of his side’s 2-1 loss to Atlanta United on Wednesday.
