United weigh £100m Tonali move but tight budget forces tough transfer choices
Manchester United have been quoted £100 million for Newcastle's Sandro Tonali but are unlikely to commit that sum to one player given budget constraints and pressing needs for a striker and winger. Several other targets — including Mateus Fernandes, Igor Thiago, and William Gomes — are also under consideration.
Manchester United are navigating a complex summer transfer window as they prepare for a return to Champions League football in 2026/27, with multiple targets identified across several positions but a limited budget shaping every decision.
Newcastle United have placed a £100 million price tag on Italian midfielder Sandro Tonali, who has attracted interest from United, Arsenal, and Manchester City. Despite the reported desire to bring Tonali to Old Trafford, United’s recruitment team considers spending that figure on a single player unrealistic given the club’s financial constraints and the need to also address striker and winger positions.
One midfielder option viewed as more attainable is West Ham’s Mateus Fernandes. United regard the young Portuguese player as a realistic target following the Hammers’ relegation to the Championship, though the progression of any deal may hinge on the outcome of Real Madrid’s upcoming presidential election, which could determine whether the Spanish club enters the bidding.
In attack, United are monitoring Brentford striker Igor Thiago as they look to strengthen their front line. The Bees value the Brazilian at around £70 million. United and Arsenal have also made enquiries about FC Porto’s 20-year-old forward William Gomes, who carries a £70 million release clause, though Atletico Madrid are reported to be leading the race for his signature.
West Ham captain Jarrod Bowen is another name on United’s radar, but the Hammers are determined to retain him as they target an immediate return to the Premier League. Bowen himself has spoken publicly about his desire to stay, and any approach from Old Trafford would require a substantial financial offer.
Bayern Munich have been linked with a summer move for Marcus Rashford, with the Bundesliga club reportedly considering the United forward after missing out on Anthony Gordon, who has joined Barcelona.
Elsewhere, United are tracking Lille’s 18-year-old midfielder Ayyoub Bouaddi, a target shared with several of Europe’s leading clubs. Arsenal reportedly had a £51.8 million bid rejected by Lille, who are holding out for a fee closer to £60 million. At the lower end of the budget spectrum, United are also monitoring Southampton’s Shea Charles as a cost-effective option aligned with the club’s INEOS-led recruitment philosophy. Charles has stated publicly that his focus remains on the upcoming season with Southampton.
