Bentancur red card earns Tottenham a point as Solanke denies 10-man United
Rodrigo Bentancur was dismissed for violent conduct in the 78th minute after a clash with Luke Shaw, but Dominic Solanke's late equaliser meant Manchester United's one-goal lead counted for nothing in a 1-1 draw at Old Trafford.
Dominic Solanke’s late equaliser rescued Tottenham Hotspur a 1-1 draw against Manchester United, moments after Rodrigo Bentancur was reduced to ten men for violent conduct following a flashpoint with Luke Shaw. Bryan Mbeumo had given Michael Carrick’s side the lead before the incident changed the complexion of the match.
The flashpoint arrived in the 78th minute. Bentancur slid into Shaw with a challenge that drew immediate criticism, prompting the United defender to shove the Spurs midfielder in response. Bentancur then appeared to make contact with his head against Shaw’s face, leaving the referee with little choice but to produce a red card.
Former Premier League official Dermot Gallagher, speaking on Ref Watch, backed the decision without hesitation. “I think it’s a red card. I haven’t spoken to many people who think it isn’t,” Gallagher said. “That tackle has got to be punished. If you give a free-kick for that, it all goes away. What follows, though, I think it’s a red card.”
Former England international Jay Bothroyd agreed the dismissal was correct but raised concerns about the proximity of both players to the advertising boards. “That first Bentancur challenge should definitely be a booking — he’s left the floor, he’s out of control. It’s an aggressive challenge,” Bothroyd said. “But by the letter of the law, as soon as you put your head in someone’s face, you’re going to get a red card.”
Bothroyd also offered a pointed observation about Shaw’s role in the incident. “I would say Shaw’s push is more dangerous than Bentancur’s. If he’s close enough to the touchline, he’s flying into the boards.”
Former Tottenham manager Tim Sherwood expressed sympathy for Shaw, noting the United full-back had already been on the receiving end of a heavy challenge from Jan Paul van Hecke before Bentancur’s intervention. “Two tackles Shaw gets,” Sherwood said. “Van Hecke comes in, gets away with that one. Then Bentancur comes in — I understand why Shaw got heated.”
Despite the numerical advantage, United could not hold on. Solanke converted late to level the score and leave Carrick’s side frustrated, having been in a winning position for the majority of the second half.
