United target Summerville after Tottenham snatch Mateus Fernandes in £85m deal
Manchester United have shifted focus to Crysencio Summerville after Tottenham hijacked their move for Mateus Fernandes with an £85m bid. United are also reported to have made checks on Lille's Ayyoub Bouaddi, a target also linked with Arsenal.
Manchester United have identified Crysencio Summerville as their top left-wing target after Tottenham Hotspur ended their pursuit of Mateus Fernandes, gazumping United’s agreed personal terms with an £85m bid for the West Ham midfielder.
United had been in advanced discussions with Fernandes but were unwilling to match Spurs’ offer, effectively ending the saga. The blow was compounded by Sandro Tonali also heading to Tottenham in a separate £100m deal, leaving United’s midfield rebuild short of its key additions.
Exploratory talks have already taken place with West Ham over a potential deal for Summerville, who is valued at more than £50m. Tottenham had also been credited with interest in the winger, with manager Roberto De Zerbi understood to admire him, but United have moved to make him their primary target on the left flank.
Midfield remains the club’s most urgent priority. United have all but completed the signing of Ederson from Atalanta, yet the Brazilian’s arrival still leaves them short following Casemiro’s departure and a serious injury to Manuel Ugarte. Aurélien Tchouaméni continues to be described as United’s dream midfield signing, though extracting the Real Madrid star from the Bernabéu presents significant financial and logistical challenges.
United are also reported to have made checks on Ayyoub Bouaddi, the 18-year-old Lille midfielder who impressed for Morocco at the World Cup in the United States. Bouaddi, valued at around £85m by Lille, has also been discussed at Arsenal and Liverpool. Felix Nmecha of Borussia Dortmund and Fulham’s Sander Berge are additionally believed to be under consideration.
The club’s transfer approach has evolved under director of football Jason Wilcox and director of recruitment Christopher Vivell, who have moved towards a more data-led model while prioritising Premier League-proven talent. That strategy bore fruit last season as United finished third in the Premier League.
