Didier Deschamps did refuse to call up Ayyoub Bouaddi for the 2026 World Cup, hastening the LOSC midfielder’s decision to join Morocco’s squad. Hubert Fournier, France’s national technical director, confirmed this in an interview with The Athletic.

“As the World Cup approached, Didier Deschamps decided not to retain Bouaddi and he preferred to play in the World Cup with Morocco,” Fournier said. “The manager felt he was not quite ready yet, while Morocco offered him that opportunity. I understand his point of view.”

The official did not hide the federation’s regrets. “Bouaddi is a talent we have followed for many years. And we know that in his age group, he is unique. It is a significant loss for our federation. But it is his choice,” he added.

Fournier emphasized that the 18-year-old player had respected all French selection procedures. “He spent a year and a half with the U-21s. He knew he was on the extended list. But we could not offer him the opportunity to participate in the World Cup for now. Competition is fierce within the France team.”

Called up by Morocco manager Mohamed Ouahbi, Bouaddi seized the opportunity decisively. On his first appearance against Brazil, the Lille midfielder impressed, quickly establishing himself as an undisputed starter for the Atlas Lions. A World Cup debut that only amplifies the regrets on the French side.
