United seal Tielemans signing as De Bruyne hails Belgium captain's World Cup leadership
Manchester United have confirmed the signing of Youri Tielemans from Aston Villa, with the midfielder arriving days after captaining Belgium at the World Cup — a campaign that drew praise from Kevin De Bruyne following a two-goal display against Senegal.
Manchester United have signed Aston Villa midfielder Youri Tielemans, with the deal confirmed on Tuesday evening just days after Belgium’s World Cup campaign concluded. The move came as a surprise to many supporters, arriving only hours after United had announced the separate signing of Andrey Santos.
Tielemans joins Old Trafford having captained Belgium under head coach Rudi Garcia, who handed him the armband ahead of a group that includes Kevin De Bruyne, Thibaut Courtois, and Romelu Lukaku. Garcia cited Tielemans’ standing within the squad as the deciding factor. “He has a good relationship with everyone in the group,” Garcia said. “He enjoys unanimity within the group. Even though other guys remain important leaders, like Kevin De Bruyne, Thibaut Courtois, Romelu Lukaku… Youri gets the armband.”
That trust was repaid in Belgium’s round of 32 clash with Senegal, where Tielemans scored twice to help turn the tie around. De Bruyne was effusive in his assessment afterwards. “Youri has been a great servant to Belgium,” the midfielder said. “He is now leading the team as captain and is someone everyone can look to, both on and off the pitch. I think he’s a fantastic guy and, thankfully, his two goals made the difference in getting us through today.”
Beyond his technical qualities — already well established through his time at Leicester City and Aston Villa in the Premier League — United’s recruitment team appear to have prioritised the leadership Tielemans brings to a dressing room. The departure of Casemiro left a void in terms of senior presence, particularly for younger players in the squad.
Kobbie Mainoo is understood to have thrived alongside Casemiro, and with United also targeting younger midfielders such as Mateus Fernandes and Elliot Anderson to play alongside the academy graduate, the need for an experienced, authoritative figure in the engine room had become pressing. Tielemans, 28, fits that profile — a player who has captained a major international side and demonstrated the temperament to lead under pressure on the biggest stages.
