United fans to stage Old Trafford protest over season-ticket banning crackdown before Manchester derby

Manchester United fans will stage a protest outside Old Trafford before Sunday’s Manchester derby, with supporter group The 1958 urging all Red fan organisations to unite against what they describe as unjust season-ticket bans stemming from the club’s anti-touting operation.

The demonstration follows months of anger directed at United after the club launched an investigation into ticket touting in July. While the club called the operation “successful”, it acknowledged that “some innocent supporters may have been affected” and issued an apology. Several season-ticket holders told the Manchester Evening News over the summer that they had received emails from the club alleging breaches of ticketing terms and conditions despite having done nothing wrong.

The backlash was significant enough to bring together United’s various fan groups, who took the rare step of releasing a joint statement condemning the operation and demanding greater transparency. Now, with the Manchester derby approaching, The 1958 have moved from words to action.

“For generations, match-going Reds have given their time, money and loyalty to Manchester United, home and away,” a spokesman for the group said. “That loyalty deserves to be treated with respect.”

The 1958 have urged supporters to gather peacefully outside The Bishop Blaize pub near Old Trafford from 3pm on Sunday. The group’s message is direct: no supporter should face sanctions without being clearly told what they are accused of and shown the evidence used to justify the action.

“This is not about one group or one individual,” the spokesperson added. “It is about how Manchester United treats its match-going supporters. It may not affect you today, it may not next time, but that day is coming for all of us.”

The group has called on supporter organisations, Fans’ Forum representatives, supporters’ clubs, and independent fan bodies to set aside any historical differences and stand together on what they frame as a matter of basic fairness. “If there is clear, substantive evidence of serious wrongdoing or organised ticket touting, show it,” the statement reads. “No loyal supporter should be treated as guilty without being given a fair opportunity to understand and challenge the case against them.”

The protest adds a charged backdrop to an already high-stakes fixture, with United and City set to meet at Old Trafford on Sunday afternoon.
