Manchester United’s summer transfer business has hit a significant obstacle after Manuel Ugarte was confirmed to have suffered a knee ligament injury at the World Cup, effectively removing him from the club’s list of saleable assets. The Uruguayan midfielder, valued at around £21m by Transfermarkt, had been earmarked for an exit to help fund incoming deals, but that plan now appears in serious doubt.

With Ugarte’s potential sale off the table, United’s ability to finance further signings this window has been complicated. The club have already agreed a £38.8m deal with Atalanta for Brazil midfielder Ederson, but midfield reinforcement remains the priority, and at least one additional signing is being targeted.

West Ham’s Mateus Fernandes has been a long-standing target, but a gap in valuations continues to stall progress. The Times reports that United are currently unwilling to meet his £80m asking price, leaving Tottenham — who are said to be more comfortable with his wage demands — in a stronger position in that race.

Lille teenager Ayyoub Bouaddi has emerged as an alternative option, though United face fierce competition for the Morocco international. RMC journalist Fabrice Hawkins reports that Manchester City, Arsenal, and Bayern Munich are all pursuing the 17-year-old. Lille value him between £69m and £86m, with that figure potentially rising further should he continue to impress at the World Cup. The French club are open to a sale but would prefer to loan him back for a season to aid his development.

The convergence of Ugarte’s injury setback, the Fernandes standoff, and the crowded pursuit of Bouaddi leaves United navigating a complex window in which player sales were intended to underpin their spending power.
