United complete £750k Orozco signing as Ineos' youth-from-abroad strategy faces scrutiny
Manchester United are set to officially announce the signing of Colombian teenager Cristian Orozco from Fortaleza CEIF this week, completing a deal agreed nine months ago. The move is the latest in a series of low-cost, high-potential youth acquisitions under Ineos, though early results from the strategy remain mixed.
Manchester United are finalising the signing of Colombian midfielder Cristian Orozco, with the 18-year-old’s move from Fortaleza CEIF set to be rubber-stamped on Monday after he arrived in Manchester over a week ago to settle ahead of the announcement.
United agreed the deal nine months ago for a fee of around $1 million (£750,000), but the transfer was structured to complete in the summer window once Orozco turned 18. He will initially join the Under-21s to be assessed by coaching staff, with no expectation of an immediate first-team role.
The signing is the latest expression of a recruitment philosophy introduced by Ineos after they took control of the club’s football operations — targeting young players from outside Europe with high upside and limited financial risk. Sekou Kone arrived from Mali, Diego Leon was scouted from Paraguay, and Enzo Kana-Biyik joined from Le Havre AC’s academy last summer.
Brexit regulations are a significant driver of the approach. United cannot sign European players under the age of 18, meaning that by the time a target becomes eligible, they are typically tied to longer contracts and attract broader competition. Looking further afield allows the club to move earlier and cheaper.
The model is framed internally as low risk, high reward: the best outcome is a player breaking into the first team; the worst is a profitable sale. Profit and Sustainability Rules across the Premier League have also pushed clubs toward buying young talent with resale value in mind, though United sources insist each signing has been made on the basis of genuine first-team potential.
Early returns, however, are modest. Neither Kone nor Leon has made a senior debut for the club. Kone was named in three Premier League matchday squads by Ruben Amorim during the 2024/25 season when injuries thinned options, but did not receive any minutes. He was subsequently loaned to Ineos-owned FC Lausanne-Sport in January, though he was left out of their UEFA Conference League squad for the second half of the campaign. Kone has returned to Lausanne for pre-season this summer, with a further loan yet to be confirmed.
Orozco’s arrival will test whether the strategy can deliver on its promise, with the teenager now beginning the long process of proving himself through United’s development ranks.
