Manuel Ugarte has described hitting ‘rock bottom’ after sustaining a knee ligament injury while representing Uruguay against Spain at the World Cup, with Manchester United confirming the 25-year-old was stretchered off and faces an extended spell on the sidelines.

The full extent of the damage is still being assessed. United released a statement saying: “Assessment of the injury is ongoing to determine the best course of treatment and the rehabilitation timescale.” No return date has been given, but the midfielder is expected to be out for several months.

Ugarte broke his silence on Instagram in an emotional post that drew widespread support from within the United dressing room. “Suffering the most serious injury a footballer can face in one of the most important matches in my country’s history, and seeing it end this way without being able to stay on the pitch and support my teammates until the final whistle, is something that will stay with me for the rest of my life,” he wrote.

Despite the gravity of the setback, the Uruguayan struck a defiant tone. “Hitting rock bottom will make me stronger in every sense, and I truly believe that’s the case here,” he added. “Success in life is about starting again every time you fall. I’ll be back stronger.”

Several United players responded directly to the post. Mason Mount wrote: “All here for you, brother.” Diogo Dalot added: “Together brother,” while Luke Shaw said: “We are with you, brother.” Matthijs de Ligt, Patrick Dorgu, Ayden Heaven, and Tyler Fletcher also offered support, with many posting red hearts. Tottenham’s Pedro Porro, a former international team-mate, added: “I love you brother.”

Ugarte joined United from Paris Saint-Germain last summer and had established himself as a key figure in the club’s midfield before the international break. His absence will be a significant blow to Ruben Amorim’s side, who are already navigating a difficult period in the Premier League.
