Ugarte ACL fear forces Manchester United to rethink entire summer midfield rebuild

Manchester United face a significant reshaping of their summer transfer strategy after Manuel Ugarte was stretchered off during Uruguay’s World Cup clash with Spain, with fears growing that the Uruguayan has torn his anterior cruciate ligament.

Ugarte posted on social media following the incident, and if the ACL diagnosis is confirmed, he is expected to miss around nine months of action. United will receive approximately £6.5 million in compensation from FIFA for the injury.

The timing is damaging for United’s midfield plans. The club had intended to sell Ugarte this summer to help finance a third central midfielder as part of a broader overhaul, but that avenue is now effectively closed. Instead, they may need to bring in cover for a player who could miss the majority of the season.

United have already agreed a deal with Atalanta for Ederson, who will join for an initial £35 million with a further £3.8 million in add-ons once the World Cup concludes. Attention has now turned to West Ham’s Mateus Fernandes as the primary midfield target, though the Hammers’ £85 million valuation has given United pause, and Tottenham are also competing for the 21-year-old.

Beyond Fernandes, United continue to monitor Bournemouth’s Alex Scott and retain admiration for Brighton’s Carlos Baleba. Real Madrid’s Aurélien Tchouaméni remains a name on their radar should he become available, though there is no indication of an imminent departure from the Bernabéu.

For a potential third midfield addition at a lower price point, United had been looking at Championship players Hayden Hackney and Shea Charles, as well as Fulham’s Sander Berge. The club could also look internally, with 19-year-old academy midfielder Tyler Fletcher considered the closest to first-team squad contention.
