Enzo Maresca appointed Manchester City manager to succeed Pep Guardiola
Enzo Maresca has been named Manchester City's new manager, succeeding Pep Guardiola. The 46-year-old Italian returns to the club where he previously served as Guardiola's assistant and oversaw the elite development squad.
Enzo Maresca has been appointed Manchester City manager, the club confirmed, ending the search for a successor to Pep Guardiola following the Spaniard’s trophy-laden decade in Manchester.
The 46-year-old Italian returns to familiar surroundings at the Etihad, having spent the 2022/23 season as Guardiola’s assistant and previously managed Manchester City’s elite development squad. He arrives having most recently managed Chelsea, whom he led to Conference League and Club World Cup glory before parting ways with the London club on 1 January.
Maresca’s appointment represents a significant homecoming. His time working directly under Guardiola gives him an intimate understanding of the club’s playing philosophy — a factor that likely weighed heavily in City’s decision-making as they sought to maintain the standards set across six Premier League titles under his predecessor.
The challenge ahead is considerable. Guardiola’s tenure is widely regarded as one of the most successful in English football history, and Maresca inherits a squad built to compete at the highest level of European football. His record as a head coach — most notably guiding Leicester City to the Championship title before his move to Chelsea — suggests he is comfortable managing expectations and delivering results under pressure.
Having been out of work since his Chelsea departure in early January, Maresca will now be tasked with ensuring Manchester City remain genuine contenders in the Premier League and Champions League.
