Themba Gorimbo (14-7) announced his retirement from MMA on Thursday, weeks after dropping a split-decision loss to Jonathan Micallef that extended his losing streak to three fights. The Zimbabwe-born UFC welterweight posted his farewell on Instagram, stating that a championship or nothing had always been his standard.

“My dream was to be a UFC champion and if I cannot be that I am going to walk away from the sport,” Gorimbo wrote. “It’s not easy but I’ve tried.”

Gorimbo did not entirely close the door on the sport in a broader sense. “Maybe I will make a comeback as a coach or manager someday but for now the focus will be my family,” he added. “I am officially retired from MMA as an athlete.”

The 29-year-old first drew widespread attention after his UFC debut victory over Takashi Sato in 2023, when he publicly revealed he had just $7.49 in his bank account. The disclosure caught the eye of Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, who said Gorimbo’s story echoed his own financial struggles as a young athlete — including a strikingly similar seven-dollar low point. Johnson subsequently purchased Gorimbo a house in Miami, ending a period in which the fighter had been sleeping at his gym, MMA Masters.

Gorimbo’s career extended well beyond the cage. He helped fund and physically build water wells in his home city of Bikita in Zimbabwe. He also attempted to construct a library for the community, though he later alleged that local government corruption led to the project’s collapse.

In January, Gorimbo had spoken about deliberately cutting off contact with family members in Zimbabwe, going as far as blocking their numbers. His retirement statement’s emphasis on family as his next priority marks a notable shift in that position.

Gorimbo finishes his UFC tenure with a record of eight fights across the promotion, leaving the sport having made a measurable impact both inside the octagon and in his home country.
