Tuchel questions whether Cole Palmer wants to play for England after fourth withdrawal

Thomas Tuchel has publicly questioned whether Cole Palmer actually wants to represent England, delivering a pointed rebuke after the Chelsea forward withdrew from the Nations League squad for the fourth time since being called up.

When asked whether it sounded as if Palmer was not desperate to join up on international duty, Tuchel did not hold back. “It’s hard to argue against what you’re saying,” the England head coach said. “For sure it’s a missed opportunity. It’s another missed opportunity. He misses too many opportunities. I am his national team coach and I can only judge him on what he is delivering for the national team and he is just missing too many opportunities.”

The timing makes the situation particularly difficult for Palmer. He completed all 90 minutes of Chelsea’s last four Premier League matches before pulling out, and had already spent the summer at home after being omitted from England’s World Cup squad. Tuchel said he understood the reasons behind other withdrawals — Declan Rice, Tino Livramento, Marcus Rashford and Kobbie Mainoo also pulled out of the original squad — but was notably less sympathetic toward Palmer’s absence.

Morgan Gibbs-White was called up as a replacement, cutting short a holiday in Dubai to join the camp. Tuchel made clear that those who reported for duty — Jude Bellingham, Morgan Rogers, Gibbs-White and Eberechi Eze — are now his priority.

“What sticks with me is the week that I have with the others,” Tuchel said. “They lose that. That sticks. It sticks because we create something. We’re just not here for a week and say: ‘oh let’s play a six against six.’ We actually work off the field, on the field, about our principles, on how to be in. This brotherhood is so important and you miss out if you’re not there.”

England face Spain in the Nations League on Saturday at Wembley. Tuchel’s unusually candid comments are likely to intensify scrutiny over Palmer’s long-term place in the international setup, with the 22-year-old’s World Cup prospects now looking increasingly uncertain.
