Manchester City found guilty of 114 Premier League financial charges and await punishment

Manchester City have been found guilty of 114 of the 115 charges brought against them by the Premier League, following a verdict delivered on Friday. The club, which was first charged in February 2023 with a series of alleged financial rule breaches, now awaits a separate hearing to determine its punishment.

The range of sanctions being discussed is wide, spanning financial penalties at one end to expulsion from the Premier League at the other. City have indicated they intend to appeal the verdict, and a spokesperson confirmed the process remains ongoing.

“The Premier League process remains ongoing, with significant elements to be completed, and subject to strict confidentiality,” the spokesperson said. “As such Manchester City FC’s position remains consistent with the club’s statement of February 2023. The club has diligently respected due process for eight years on the basis the Premier League board and executive would behave as an independent, impartial and fair-minded regulator, free from partisan influence.”

In the hours following the verdict, City’s official social media accounts continued posting routine club content — including a highlights reel of summer signing Rayan Cherki, a player-of-the-month tribute to Erling Haaland, and a promotion for a local Manchester restaurant. The posts underlined the club’s apparent intention to project normality while the sanctions process plays out.

City chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak had previously signalled he would speak publicly once a verdict was reached. “Until we have a ruling, I can’t say much,” he said in May. “Once we have a ruling, believe me, we’re going to have a wonderful sit down together and I’ll say everything I’ve wanted to say for the last three years.” No such statement had been issued at the time of publication.

The case is one of the most consequential in English football history, with the outcome of the punishment phase likely to reshape the Premier League’s approach to financial regulation for years to come.
