Toulouse flanker Francois Cros set to end 18-year association with move to Lyon

Francois Cros is set to leave Toulouse for Top 14 rivals Lyon on a three-year deal following the 2027 Rugby World Cup in Australia, according to French outlet Midi Olympique. The 32-year-old flanker, who has spent his entire professional career at Toulouse after joining the academy in 2009, agreed terms with Lyon after weeks of speculation that also drew interest from Montpellier.

Lyon moved quickly to secure the 44-cap France international before Montpellier could intensify their pursuit, and the deal now appears settled. For Cros, the chance to lock in a final long-term contract on improved terms is reported to have been the decisive factor.

The departure would close a chapter defined by sustained success. Cros started all eight finals Toulouse have won since 2019, including last season’s 28-20 victory over Montpellier at the Stade de France, and has been one of head coach Ugo Mola’s most reliable forwards throughout that dominant run.

His exit is not an isolated one. Fullback Thomas Ramos is already confirmed to be joining Racing 92 at the end of the 2026-27 campaign, meaning Toulouse face the prospect of losing two senior France internationals in the same summer. Salary-cap constraints and an anticipated reduction in financial support tied to French international players have complicated contract talks with several key figures at the club.

For Lyon, landing Cros would represent a significant statement of intent. The club have been building steadily in the Top 14 and adding a forward of his experience and pedigree — proven across both domestic and European competition — would strengthen their ambitions considerably.

Cros’ contract runs until June 2027, meaning Toulouse retain his services through what could be another title challenge before he departs. The club begin their Top 14 title defence with a trip to La Rochelle on 6 September.
