Toulouse and Montpellier face 34-degree heat in Top 14 Final as France heatwave peaks
Saturday night's Top 14 Final at the Stade de France could be played in record-breaking temperatures of 34 degrees as a severe heatwave grips France, with the French government raising its national health alert to its highest level.
Toulouse and Montpellier will contest the Top 14 Final at the Stade de France in Saint-Denis on Saturday night under potentially record-breaking conditions, with temperatures forecast to reach 34 degrees at kick-off despite the 9pm local start time.
The extreme heat is part of a wider heatwave that has prompted the French government to raise its national health alert to level three of the Orsan health emergency plan. Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu confirmed the activation of the emergency protocol, while Paris Mayor Emmanuel Grégoire highlighted a rising mortality rate in the capital. At least 40 people are understood to have drowned since the heatwave began, as many sought relief in open water from temperatures that climbed as high as 44 degrees elsewhere in the country.
Météo-France recorded an average minimum overnight temperature of 22 degrees on Wednesday, with Rennes reaching a record 41 degrees earlier in the week — figures that underline the severity of conditions players will face on the pitch.
The scenario mirrors what unfolded in Bilbao last month during the EPCR Challenge Cup and Investec Champions Cup finals, where matches kicked off at 31 and 34 degrees respectively. Top 14 organisers are expected to implement cooling breaks to protect player welfare, as was the case during those European finals in Spain.
For Toulouse, victory would secure a 25th Bouclier de Brennus and a fourth consecutive Top 14 title. Head coach Ugo Mola will lean heavily on flanker Jack Willis and Scotland back Blair Kinghorn as they look to extend their dynasty.
Montpellier arrive at Saint-Denis with genuine ambitions of ending that run. Billy Vunipola, who has been in the form of his career since joining the club in 2024, scored a try in their 59-26 Challenge Cup final demolition of Ulster. He is joined in the Montpellier squad by lock Adam Beard and scrum-half Ali Price.
How both teams manage the physical toll of the heat may prove as decisive as any tactical battle — the Bouclier de Brennus could yet be decided as much by endurance as by skill.
