Tottenham seal £85m Mateus Fernandes deal to edge out Manchester United
Tottenham have agreed an £85million guaranteed fee with West Ham for Portuguese midfielder Mateus Fernandes, 21, outbidding Manchester United to land one of the summer's most sought-after midfield targets.
Tottenham have agreed an £85million deal to sign Mateus Fernandes from West Ham, ending Manchester United’s pursuit of the 21-year-old Portuguese midfielder and making him Spurs’ fifth summer signing.
The fee is well above United’s valuation of Fernandes, who had been identified as a priority target by manager Michael Carrick as he looks to rebuild his midfield. The Red Devils had already withdrawn from a move for Nottingham Forest’s Elliot Anderson and declined to match the £116million bid Manchester City submitted successfully for another target, leaving them searching for alternatives.
United’s midfield situation has grown more pressing with Casemiro departing upon the expiry of his contract. Carrick’s side have, however, agreed a £35million deal with Atalanta to sign holding midfielder Ederson as they look to address the void.
For Tottenham, Fernandes fills a significant gap left by the departures of Yves Bissouma, whose contract has expired, and Joao Palhinha, whose loan has ended. The situation is further complicated by Lucas Bergvall having informed club chiefs that he wants a new challenge. Spurs’ other summer arrivals — Andy Robertson, Marcos Senesi, and Martin Dubravka on free transfers, plus Jan Paul van Hecke from Brighton for £52million — have all come before this record outlay.
The deal represents a substantial profit for West Ham, who signed Fernandes from Southampton for £38million just a year ago. Despite being unable to prevent the club’s relegation to the Championship, the midfielder impressed throughout the season, scoring four goals and registering four assists across 38 appearances in all competitions.
Fernandes also made his senior international debut for Portugal in April, though he was not included in Roberto Martinez’s 26-man squad for the World Cup. His move to Spurs — a cross-London transfer from a relegated West Ham — marks a significant step up as he enters the peak years of his development.
Roberto De Zerbi’s Tottenham side narrowly avoided relegation themselves last season and have moved quickly to strengthen, capitalising on West Ham’s need to raise funds following their drop to the second tier. Jarrod Bowen is another West Ham player attracting interest from multiple Premier League clubs.
