Tottenham beat Man United to Mateus Fernandes in club-record £85m deal
Tottenham Hotspur have agreed a club-record £85 million fee with West Ham United for Portugal midfielder Mateus Fernandes, fending off competition from Manchester United, Real Madrid, and PSG. The 21-year-old becomes Spurs' fifth signing of the summer under Roberto De Zerbi.
Tottenham Hotspur have agreed a club-record £85 million deal to sign West Ham United midfielder Mateus Fernandes, beating Manchester United to the 21-year-old’s signature in what had become a two-horse race between the Premier League clubs. The fee surpasses the £65 million Spurs paid for Dominic Solanke two years ago.
Fernandes, a Portugal international who joined West Ham from Southampton, had attracted interest from Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain as well as both Manchester clubs before Tottenham prevailed. He becomes the fifth signing of a busy summer window for manager Roberto De Zerbi, joining Conor Gallagher, Andrew Robertson, Marcos Senesi, and Jan Paul van Hecke at the club.
De Zerbi identified Fernandes as central to Tottenham’s ongoing rebuild after steering the club to Premier League safety last month — a survival that came at West Ham’s expense. The north London club has undergone a notable shift in approach under the Lewis family, who hold majority ownership through ENIC and pledged to be “all in” in financing the overhaul needed to lift Spurs away from back-to-back 17th-place finishes.
That commitment has seen the rigid wage structure established under former chairman Daniel Levy dismantled this year by the Lewis family and chief executive Vinai Venkatesham, clearing the way for a more aggressive transfer strategy.
The deal represents a significant setback for Manchester United’s own midfield rebuild. Michael Carrick’s side have endured a difficult start to the window: Casemiro has departed following the expiry of his contract, Manuel Ugarte suffered a serious knee injury while representing Uruguay at the World Cup, and a move for Elliot Anderson also fell through after the midfielder agreed to join Manchester City for around £116 million.
United are understood to be closing in on Atalanta midfielder Ederson, but are expected to pursue at least one further midfield addition before the window closes.
