Ilia Topuria has responded sharply to remarks made by Justin Gaethje’s father ahead of their lightweight title unification bout at UFC White House on June 14, telling the Gaethje family: “Fathers hope. Champions know.”

John Ray Gaethje made the comments during a family dinner on Saturday, footage of which was posted to Justin Gaethje’s YouTube channel on Monday. Speaking before the meal, the elder Gaethje expressed confidence in his son by drawing comparisons to previous opponents. “He’s fighting another little short guy, and he’s done really well against [Michael] Chandler and [Rafael] Fiziev, and a few others,” John Ray Gaethje said. “I just see the same thing happening for this fight.”

Topuria, who stands at 17-0 as a professional, saw the clip circulate on social media and responded with a direct message to the Gaethje family. “I’ve heard this story before: bigger men, stronger men, better men. Men who said I was just a small guy who was about to get a lesson in humility,” Topuria wrote. “They all learned the truth the same way. Your son already knows who I am. On June 14th, you will too. 18-0 PAPA.”

The Georgian fighter’s last outing came at lightweight, where he stopped Charles Oliveira in the first round to claim the vacant 155-pound title. Topuria was subsequently sidelined due to personal issues, during which time Gaethje stepped in and won the interim belt with a victory over Paddy Pimblett in January.

With both men now holding versions of the lightweight title, June 14 will see them meet to determine the undisputed champion. John Ray Gaethje’s pre-fight confidence has added a personal edge to a rivalry that was already building considerable momentum, and Topuria has made clear he intends to answer any doubts in the same manner he always has — inside the octagon.
