Ilia Topuria and Justin Gaethje have escalated their pre-fight rivalry into a bitter personal exchange ahead of their lightweight title unification bout at UFC White House: Freedom 250 on Sunday, June 14.

Topuria (17-0) defends the lightweight title against interim champion Gaethje (27-5) in the main event, and what began as a respectful build-up has deteriorated sharply in recent days. The flashpoint came when Gaethje referenced Topuria’s recent divorce from Giorgina Uzcategui Badell, saying he understood why Topuria’s wife had left him and that he would not want to be the Georgian-Spaniard’s roommate either.

Topuria was quick to respond, drawing a firm line around his personal life. “Justin crossed a line,” he said. “What happened between my ex-wife and me is our business. We may no longer be together, but she is the mother of my daughter. To everyone insulting her or speaking about things they know nothing about: show some respect. You don’t have to respect our relationship. But respecting someone’s mother should be one of the most basic codes in life. Be better.”

Gaethje pushed back, arguing the tension originated with Topuria’s own promise to knock him out in front of his father. “Proving my point. Insufferable little bitch boy. Never said a thing about your wife. You want to speak words to my father then act like I crossed some line. We already fighting buddy.”

Topuria countered that it was Gaethje’s father who had started the family-related provocation, claiming the elder Gaethje called him a “short guy” while holding a beer and predicting his son would dominate the fight. Topuria used the exchange to sharpen his knockout promise.

“You should’ve kept your father out of this,” Topuria said. “He was the one calling me a short guy and saying you’d smash me, all while holding a beer in his hand. Then you started talking about my divorce and telling the world you wouldn’t want to be my roommate. Idiot. First, we’re fighting, not dating. Second, I’m not looking for a roommate. When I put you to sleep and you’re lying there next to the rose, I’ll look at your father and ask him one simple question: Who’s the short one now? I’m gonna break you Justin.”

The animosity adds another layer to what is already a high-stakes contest. Topuria is unbeaten in 17 professional bouts, while Gaethje — a former interim lightweight champion — brings a record of 27-5 and a reputation as one of the division’s most dangerous strikers. With both men now trading personal barbs, the atmosphere heading into June 14 has shifted considerably.
