Thompson's clinical finish hands Chelsea a 1-0 derby win over Arsenal to climb WSL table

Alyssa Thompson’s composed finish six minutes before half-time proved the difference as Chelsea defeated London rivals Arsenal 1-0 at Stamford Bridge, lifting the Blues to joint-second in the Women’s Super League.

The goal came from a moment of high defensive pressure. Arsenal were caught playing out from the back, and when Keira Walsh’s shot was saved, Thompson was quickest to react and slot in the rebound. It was the decisive moment in a match Chelsea ultimately controlled, despite Arsenal pressing for an equaliser in the second half through Chloe Kelly’s angled drive — which was blocked — and Alessia Russo’s shot, which was charged down.

The result gives Chelsea their third WSL win of the season and leaves Arsenal, who had drawn their previous two league matches, still searching for consistency.

Elsewhere on the same matchday, Tottenham continued their impressive early-season form with a 4-0 thrashing of Aston Villa. Victoria Pelova, the Netherlands midfielder signed after leaving Arsenal in the summer, scored twice — breaking the deadlock in the 54th minute and adding a second that clipped in off the underside of the crossbar. Caitlin Dijkstra headed in a third before Cathinka Tandberg rounded off the scoring with two minutes remaining. It was Spurs’ second heavy win in succession, following a 7-0 dismantling of promoted Crystal Palace the previous week.

Liverpool claimed the Merseyside derby bragging rights with a 2-0 victory over Everton at Anfield. Beata Olsson headed the Reds in front early on, and Cornelia Kapocs sealed it with a late goal.

Manchester United recorded their first WSL win under new head coach Eva Olid, edging West Ham 2-1 in Leigh. Elisabeth Terland and summer signing Andrea Medina scored for United, before Viviane Asseyi pulled one back from the penalty spot deep into added time.

In a high-scoring draw, Birmingham and Crystal Palace shared six goals in a 3-3 thriller at St Andrew’s. Oceane Hurtre set the tone by firing Birmingham ahead after just 40 seconds — the quickest goal of the WSL season so far.
