Sunderland could pull off a double transfer coup: the Black Cats have reached a verbal agreement with Marseille to sign Brazilian winger Igor Paixao, and have simultaneously approached Manchester City about a loan deal for Jack Grealish, according to French and English sources and The Athletic journalist David Ornstein.

The Paixao deal is progressing despite internal tensions at Olympique de Marseille. While owner Frank McCourt is continuing negotiations, sporting director Grégory Lorenzi and manager Bruno Genesio are opposed. The transfer of the 26-year-old Brazilian is nonetheless reported at €35 million, bonuses included.

In parallel, Sunderland have submitted an offer to Manchester City to acquire Jack Grealish on loan. The 30-year-old England international, with 39 caps to his name, has returned to Etihad Stadium after a loan spell at Everton last season that was deemed successful, but reportedly does not feature in new manager Enzo Maresca’s plans. The north of England club would be willing to cover part of the player’s salary and negotiate a purchase option.

If both deals go through, Sunderland would have unprecedented competition on the left flank, with two high-level attacking talents competing for a starting spot.
