Gabriel deadline passes as Manchester United miss chance to equal 70-year-old record
The window for 16-year-old JJ Gabriel to equal Manchester United's youngest-ever appearance record has closed, with the teenager training in Barcelona and pushing for a move to a European club after handing in an exit request.
The opportunity for JJ Gabriel to become Manchester United’s joint youngest-ever player has expired, with the 16-year-old now 16 years and 20 days old — one day past the threshold needed to match David Gaskell’s record set in the 1956 FA Charity Shield.
Gaskell was just 16 years and 19 days old when he made his debut for United, a record that has stood for nearly seven decades. Gabriel had been widely tipped to challenge it this season, but last month he submitted an exit request, training separately in Barcelona as he plots a move to a European club. Bayern Munich, Real Madrid and Barcelona have all been linked with the teenager.
United are refusing to terminate Gabriel’s academy registration, which complicates any swift departure. Despite that resistance, it is growing increasingly likely the club will lose him for a minimal fee — a significant blow given the talent he is considered to represent.
The record milestone was not the only painful storyline at Old Trafford on Sunday. United suffered a 3-0 Premier League defeat to Bournemouth, with Rayan, Marcus Tavernier and Evanilson all finding the net. The result was United’s third league defeat of the season and left them just one point above the relegation zone.
Manager Michael Carrick is facing mounting pressure following the loss. After applauding supporters who chanted his name as he left the pitch, Carrick addressed his future directly in his post-match comments.
“I totally understand the situation,” Carrick said. “I’m not expecting anything in particular to be honest, I’m carrying on as normal. I love this place and I’ll always do what I feel is going to be best for the football club, whatever decision is made on anything, really. That’s kind of it — I’m not expecting either way.”
With Gabriel’s record chance gone and results continuing to disappoint, United face a difficult week on multiple fronts.
