Stormers recall Nel, Senatla and Du Plessis for URC quarter-final against Cardiff
The Stormers have named what director of rugby John Dobson believes may be the most experienced side in the franchise's history for Saturday's URC quarter-final at DHL Stadium, with captain Ruhan Nel returning from injury alongside Seabelo Senatla and Dan du Plessis.
The Stormers have named three returning players — Ruhan Nel, Seabelo Senatla and Dan du Plessis — for their Vodacom URC quarter-final against Cardiff at DHL Stadium in Cape Town on Saturday, with director of rugby John Dobson describing the matchday squad as potentially the most experienced the franchise has ever selected.
Nel, who will captain the side on his return from injury, and Du Plessis will make their 30th start together in midfield, drawing level with De Wet Barry and Marius Joubert as the most-capped centre combination in Stormers history. The trio are the only changes from the team that ended the regular season in third place.
Dobson has retained the same forward pack that featured in the final league fixture, a 22-16 loss to Cardiff at the Arms Park two weekends ago. The bench also carries added depth, with props Vernon Matongo and Zachary Porthen included alongside utility forward Ruan Ackermann, who has also recovered from injury in time for the play-off.
“We have some key players returning, which makes this one of the most experienced DHL Stormers teams that we have ever selected,” Dobson said. “We have earned this opportunity to play a quarter-final in front of our fans and we want to make it count.”
Cardiff head coach Corniel van Zyl acknowledged the shift in pressure but insisted his side would look to impose their own game. “The pressure was on us last time out at Cardiff Arms Park, but I think that has obviously shifted back onto them a little now,” he said. “If we can start well and apply pressure through what we do best — scoring points — then we can put them under pressure. That is ultimately the only way we can impose ourselves on them.”
The Stormers enter the match as home favourites, with a place in the URC semi-finals on the line. The quarter-final kicks off at 15:30 local time on Saturday.
