Stella calls Norris-Piastri Sprint clash 'unacceptable' and demands team-first reset
McLaren team principal Andrea Stella confronted both drivers after Lando Norris collided with Oscar Piastri on the final lap of the Singapore Sprint, sending Piastri into the wall and costing the team a significant haul of Constructors' Championship points.
McLaren team principal Andrea Stella declared the inter-team collision between Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri during Saturday’s Singapore Sprint race “unacceptable”, convening an immediate meeting with both drivers and making clear that individual interests will not override the team’s championship ambitions.
The incident unfolded on the final lap of the wet-weather Sprint at Marina Bay. Norris launched an aggressive lunge down the inside of Piastri at Turn 5 while hunting down Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc. The two McLarens made heavy contact, pitching Piastri into the barrier for a DNF while Norris limped to eighth place — a result that stripped the team of a potentially large points haul in the Constructors’ standings.
Despite the chaos of Saturday, both Norris and Piastri recovered to score points in Sunday’s main Grand Prix, though McLaren also faced questions about a pace deficit to their title rivals across the full weekend.
“As for what happened yesterday in the Sprint race, I said that it was an unacceptable incident, and I was very pleased that our drivers also took this view,” Stella said after Sunday’s race. “So, we’re on the same page about how we want to move this team forward, in a joint effort.”
Rather than dwelling on the mechanics of the contact itself, Stella used the incident to restate McLaren’s operating principles at a critical stage of the season. “We’ll discuss it further, but not because we need to revisit the ‘why’ or ‘how’ of the contact, but to reflect together on what sort of team we want to be,” he said. “We must be aware that, whether we’re at the factory, in the pitlane or in the cockpit of a car, the team’s interests take precedence over any individual’s interests.”
Norris apologised to the team over the radio during the closing laps of Sunday’s Grand Prix — a gesture Stella welcomed and indicated he expects to see repeated. “This is what I, and everyone who works at McLaren, expect from our drivers. I was therefore pleased with what Lando said during the final laps of the race, and I expect to see more examples of this in the future.”
Separately, Stella acknowledged that the MCL40 currently lacks the aerodynamic performance to consistently match its championship rivals, signalling that upgrades remain a priority as the team looks to protect its position in the Constructors’ Championship.
