Sri Lanka's visa failure hands Korea a 20-0 walkover in Asia Rugby Championship
The final fixture of the Asia Rugby Emirates Men's Championship has been cancelled after Sri Lanka could not secure travel visas to enter Korea in time for Saturday's match in Incheon, with the points awarded to the host nation.
Sri Lanka’s inability to obtain travel visas in time has ended the Asia Rugby Emirates Men’s Championship on a sour note, with the governing body awarding Saturday’s cancelled fixture in Incheon to Korea by a 20-0 scoreline.
The Tuskers had been unable to complete the visa process before the scheduled kick-off at Namdong Asiad Rugby Stadium on 13 June 2026. Asia Rugby confirmed that it explored rescheduling options alongside Sri Lanka Rugby and the Korea Rugby Union, but found no viable window remaining in the 2026 competition cycle given international calendar constraints, venue availability, and team commitments.
“Asia Rugby regrets to announce that the final scheduled fixture of the Asia Rugby Emirates Men’s Championship 2026 between Korea and Sri Lanka has been cancelled,” the governing body said in a statement. “Despite the collective efforts of all parties, the visa process could not be completed within the required timeframe.”
The cancellation is a particularly bitter outcome for Sri Lanka, who had shown genuine promise in the tournament. The Tuskers pushed Rugby World Cup 2027 qualifiers Hong Kong China to the wire in their opening match, losing 15-14, and would have entered Saturday’s game with confidence against a Korea side in poor form — the hosts had won just one of their last seven Tests, including a 45-9 defeat to Hong Kong China.
The result is ultimately inconsequential to the destination of the title. Hong Kong China had already clinched their seventh consecutive Asia Rugby men’s championship by defeating both Sri Lanka and Korea, cementing their status as the dominant force in the regional game ahead of the 2027 World Cup qualification cycle.
