Tonda Eckert will remain as Southampton manager after the Football Association handed him a suspended six-week ban for his role in the spygate scandal, bringing to a close the FA’s misconduct proceedings against the German coach.

Southampton were expelled from last season’s EFL Championship play-offs after an independent panel found the club had sent staff to spy on the training sessions of three opponents. The punishment denied them a shot at promotion to the Premier League — a prize worth at least £200m — and the same panel imposed a four-point deduction on their current campaign. Eckert was subsequently charged with misconduct by the FA in July.

The suspended ban means Eckert faces no immediate absence from the dugout, provided he does not commit further breaches. Southampton welcomed the resolution in a club statement: “We hope this now brings a conclusion to a regrettable period of our history and measures have been put in place to ensure that such errors in judgement never happen again at our club.”

Eckert admitted that staff were dispatched to monitor training sessions at Oxford and Ipswich during the regular season, and at Middlesbrough ahead of the play-off semi-final in May. The scandal was exposed when a Southampton intern was confronted by Middlesbrough staff at one such session. Eckert said he was unaware that the practice breached EFL rules.

The independent EFL panel that originally sanctioned the club took a dim view of the culture that enabled the activity, finding that younger staff felt pressured to carry it out and describing it as “a contrived and determined plan from top down to gain a competitive advantage”.

Southampton used their statement to thank supporters for their backing throughout the process, adding: “Our fan base is unmatched, and we are excited to move forward together towards a bright future.”
