Smith returns as Harlequins ring eight changes after humiliating 48-0 Gloucester defeat
Marcus Smith makes his first appearance of the season as head coach Jason Gilmore overhauls the Harlequins lineup for Sunday's Gallagher Premiership trip to Sale Sharks, following a 48-0 thrashing by Gloucester that left the club bottom of the table.
Marcus Smith returns from a finger injury for his 198th Harlequins appearance as head coach Jason Gilmore makes eight changes ahead of Sunday’s Gallagher Premiership visit to Sale Sharks. The reshuffle comes after last week’s 48-0 defeat at Gloucester — the club’s heaviest league loss in 26 years — left Harlequins rooted to the bottom of the table.
Smith is joined in the backline by Luke Northmore and Tyrone Green, while Sam Riley starts at hooker and Simon Kerrod comes in at tighthead. Ireland international Kieran Treadwell takes his place in the engine room, Seb Driscoll returns at openside flanker, and Chandler Cunningham-South starts at number eight.
Club legend Ugo Monye did not hold back in his assessment of the Kingsholm performance, calling it “one of the worst performances I have ever seen.” But scrum-half Will Porter, who retains his place, insists the squad will use the criticism as fuel rather than allow it to fracture the group.
“You have a decision to make in those moments whether you’re going to let the outside noise come in and break up as a team or you’re going to come together, use it almost as motivation to move on,” Porter said.
Pointing to encouraging signs earlier in the campaign — including a competitive display against Bath — Porter argued that one dismal result should not erase weeks of progress. “We can’t just let one week undo 12 or 13 weeks of work,” he said.
The scrum-half was equally direct about what the club owes its supporters. “We owe our fans, who are amazing when it comes to travelling to support us at home games. We owe them a good performance. We want to fire shots and play the Harlequins’ way, which is an entertaining brand of rugby and is threatening from anywhere.”
Porter framed the external pressure in starkly collective terms: “It’s us versus the world, and we’re happy we’re having that mindset. We want to change people’s perception of us, and I think getting some results this weekend will do it.”
Harlequins XV: George Furbank; Tyrone Green, Luke Northmore, Bryn Bradley, Cadan Murley (c); Marcus Smith, Will Porter; Will Hobson, Sam Riley, Simon Kerrod, James Dun, Kieran Treadwell, Jack Kenningham, Seb Driscoll, Chandler Cunningham-South.
